Ryan began his career at age 16 working backstage in theatre as a dresser in the wardrobe department. After moving to London he worked backstage on ‘From Here To Eternity’ at the Shaftesbury Theatre and that’s when he fell in love with the wigs, hair and makeup department.
Ryan had long days, studying for hair and beauty qualifications each day then heading straight to the theatre to work on evenings performances. Ryan's impressive credits include; Ghost Stories, 1984, The Boys In The Band, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, Matilda The Musical, Beautiful The Carole King Musical, The Rocky Horror Show, Tina The Tina Turner Musical, An Inspector Calls, Six The Musical, Murder On The Orient Express and Titanique.
Ryan found a new love for drag as Rye in 2018 to raise money for charities, participating in marathons and runs for Make A Difference Trust, The Terence Higgins Trust and MIND. RYE will be running the London Marathon in April 2026 - check him out! http://2026tcslondonmarathon.enthuse.com/pf/rye
After chatting with other wig stylists, Ryan started posting photos and videos of his wigs online, which attracted a whole new customer base, and his work began appearing on Drag Race UK, Global All Stars, Drag Race Germany and Canada Vs The World. Ryan explained it felt surreal seeing wigs he had created in his bedroom appearing on huge television shows.
Ryan began using How's Your Head Wigs since 2020 and his favourite shade – which has also become Rye’s signature colour – is Pastellic Foxglove Magenta. From there, he began working on TV shows such as The Eurovision Song Contest. His wigs have seen on Britain's Got Talent, Strictly Come Dancing, Doctor Who and Dancing on Ice. He was also an artist on the crowd hair and makeup team for the Wicked movies.
In 2025 Ryan made the decision to shift focus from full time theatre work, to put energy into his own company Walklett Wigs. It’s a huge step for a stylist to go independent, I admire and celebrate it! Ryan has had such a diverse career, which has organically developed his skills and led him to amazing opportunity by simply following his passion. I have admired so much of Ryan's work, some of the most realistic replicas of famous hair, beautiful vintage sets and incredibly intricate designs which have stood out from the crowd.
